The University of Maine System's Risk and Safety Management Department is seeking a Safety Specialist. This full-time position is on the University of Maine's Orono campus. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with some evening and weekend hours to support all employees during their work shifts, as needed. This position requires up to 50% travel statewide with occasional overnights. The Safety Specialist is responsible for performing client observations (audits), conducting training, and writing documents in areas related to occupational and life safety in order to comply with federal and state regulations. This position will work closely with all campus personnel throughout the University of Maine System (UMS) to provide outreach, training, consultation, and programmatic support for occupational and life safety. The Safety Specialist works under general supervision and is expected to be self-motivated and accomplish goals. The Risk and Safety Management (RSM) program is a system-wide department dedicated to serving all seven campuses of the University of Maine System. Salary and Benefits: The normal hiring range for this position is $50,000 to $60,000 commensurate with experience and skills. Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements Ability to work independently, as a team member, and with community members such as employees, students, and volunteers. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with internal and external customers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Ability to act in an advisory capacity or technical liaison. Excellent team facilitation and time management skills. Strong computer skills with a variety of personal computers and software programs, Google, Microsoft, and Adobe Suites. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to work odd shits to accommodate client's needs. Valid Driver's License in good standing Ability to travel up to 50% of the calendar year to support clients throughout the state. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in occupational or life safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, emergency management, occupational health, life or physical sciences, physics, biology or chemistry, or one of the following are required: Five years of experience directly related to occupational or life safety in the military. Five years of progressively more technical occupational and life safety experience AND a certification by an appropriate body such as OSHA Technical Institute, National Fire Protection Association, National Safety Council, Board of Certifying Safety Professionals, or the American Society of Safety Professionals. Five years of occupational or life safety experience.
