Early submissions are encouraged as applications will be reviewed on a regular and ongoing basis.* The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department is seeking a Landscape Maintenance Technician to join our Team. We are looking to fill one vacant position in our Street Landscapes Crew. This position will be responsible for maintaining the grounds, vegetation and infrastructure along the parkways, medians, and right of ways throughout the city streets. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, strong work ethic and a passion for serving their community as a team player. WHAT YOU'LL DO: * Maintain plantings, grounds and infrastructure in municipal parks, street landscapes, recreation areas, mall areas, public housing and facility grounds. * Water, mow, weed, trim, edge, renovate, aerate and fertilize lawns; weed, prune, mulches, feed, fertilize and irrigate shrubs, trees and flower beds; mix and apply fertilizer and may apply pesticides and herbicides; install and maintain irrigation equipment and sprinklers; clean, maintain, and pick up rubbish and debris from landscaped areas, paved areas, paths and walks, median traffic islands, fields, courts and other facilities; * Assist in installation, moving and repair of playground and related recreational equipment; maintain and prepare athletic fields; grades, fill and shape baseball diamonds; oversee and participate in the removal of graffiti; perform rodent abatement activities. * Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment, tools and related safety equipment; drive vehicles required to transport materials, tools and equipment; operate commercial motorized equipment such as gang mowers and edgers, tractors, front end loaders, sprayers, graffiti removal apparatus and other related equipment; * Operate a variety of hand and power tools such as hand mowers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, chain saws, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms and other maintenance tools. * Implement traffic control measures at job sites, including sign placement, traffic control arrow-board and coning. * Maintain record of work performed; enter data properly. * Perform duties in a professional and safe manner. Follow all safety and personnel rules, policies and processes. Assist and train less experienced personnel; understand, implement and train personnel in proper safety procedures. * Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve complaints. * Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures, work methods and safety requirements associated with assigned duties. Payroll/Classification Title: Maintenance Technician SUPERVISION RECEIVED/SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Receives close supervision and specific direction from Park Maintenance Supervisors and Senior Landscape Maintenance Technicians regarding assignments and deadlines. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker in that it provides semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance work. WORK SCHEDULE: The normal work week is on a 9/80 schedule; 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Thursday, with alternating Fridays off. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours, including weekends. In addition, this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. This position is governed by overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay. WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 30 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold and is exposed to heavy dust and pollen. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides and herbicides which may expose the employee to fumes and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions. (This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.) * Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance and operations work in support of City departments or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools, supplies and equipment for assignment; performs work following established safety policies and procedures. * Operates and maintains assigned equipment, tools and supplies; performs basic inspections to ensure safe operating conditions; cleans and performs preventative maintenance; and monitors need for replacement or advanced repair/maintenance work. * Plans, monitors and reviews inventory and supply needs; places orders or requests based on requirements. * Maintains activity logs, records, work orders and related reports. * Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned. POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE: Positions assigned to grounds maintenance may be responsible for: * Keeping grounds at city owned facilities and parks including irrigation maintenance; * Removing litter; * Performing weed abatement; * Inspecting grounds; * Applying chemicals and pesticides; * Purchasing supplies; The following are the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification: EDUCATION: * High School Diploma or GED EXPERIENCE: * Two (2) years of maintenance experience related to assignment LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS: * Valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record Depending on assignment, some positions may require: * Valid California Fork Lift License * Licensing as a qualified pesticide applicator OTHER REQUIREMENTS: * Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing APPLICATION PROCESS: * Submit NEOGOV/Government Jobs on-line application. * Complete and submit responses to the supplemental questions, if required. * Upload resume, cover letter, proof of degree (transcript), or other requested documents. NOTE: For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work. Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions. Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis. This position requires a 12 month probationary period.
